Why are mixer taps so resistant?

Generally speaking, single-handle mixer taps are connected to a high-quality mechanism that activates and regulates the water flow, also known as a cartridge, which requires no maintenance. The material used to manufacture a ceramic cartridge is highly resistant and comprises two discs which move against each other in a shearing action.

Some brands say that ceramic cartridges will last forever, while others advise renewing them every 25 or 30 years. Changing the cartridge is in fact advantageous, because they are simple to replace. The mechanism consists of an independent system which includes the two ceramic discs that rotate one above the other. At TRES, we use a patented clutch system. If you select the temperature when the tap is off, the discs don’t move and don’t wear out, ensuring greater durability and a more gentle action.

The entire cartridge can be replaced if need be. Having an assemblage integrated in a single part rules out the possibility of leaks associated with washers, small parts or complicated components of the gear system, as can occur with other types of tapware. We therefore offer a fast and simple solution: if the system wears down, the old cartridge must be replaced with a new one. This means you don't have to locate the internal problem and replace certain system parts. It also means you don't have to dismantle the entire tap and it requires no special tools.

If your mixer tap drips, you’ll know the problem is inside the part, so you can remove it and replace the ceramic cartridge with a new one. Before changing it, remember to shut off the water valve to prevent further damage. If the problem happens again within a short period of time, you have chosen a model from an unreliable and unknown brand. The tap may not comply with safety regulations and could have significant design flaws, causing constant water filtrations. It could also lead to leaks due to the build-up of dirt; it may be obstructed because of mineral deposits in the water or the discs might be cracked or damaged. As we said before, the entire ceramic cartridge must be replaced.
