I think it is a nice feature, but we need to discuss whether to introduce such a possibility and what priority to give it.

Looking at same feature. Understand at present a custom icon other than awesome ones cannot be done. However is there a work around to simply use a svg directly?

we don't allow to use custom SVG icons for that. Just icon from MDBIcon.

You can use SVG with font awesome. Here is a link to a simply "hack" that you can check. Maybe in your case it will work.
